The Vital Signs program of Conservation International and the Africa Innovations Institute have released a report identifying key areas of Uganda’s natural capital that are critical to achieving the country’s ambitious commitments on climate action and sustainable development.

The document, Integrating Nature into Uganda’s National Planning, also sets out the policies and actions needed to ensure protection of those key resources, including forests, wetlands, rangelands and fisheries, in the face of heightening pressure on them. This followed extensive engagements with stakeholders from public and private sector, academia and others.

“Uganda is a nature-based country dependent on the health of its ecosystems to survive and thrive. But there is little guidance on how the nation can manage its natural ecosystems to ensure that socioeconomic development is sustainable. This report seeks to cover that critical need,” said Dr. Peter Alele, Senior Regional Director for Conservation Science at Conservational International Africa.

He added: "We noted opportunities for improved planning, identified geographic areas whose natural capital contributes the most to achieving climate and development obejectives and shared recommendations on how best to integrate the value of this natural capital into the planning process."
