On 26th June 2018, Conservation International (CI) through its Vital Signs Program joined in the launch of Uganda’s National Determined Contribution Partnership Plan. The NDC partnership plan outlines Uganda’s strategy to deliver on its commitments under the Paris Agreement as well its climate and development goals. The plan also allows for effective planning and coordination among the government and partners including resource mobilization and transparency on NDC implementation.

In collaboration with other implementing partners including UNDP, FAO, GGGI, African Development bank among others, Conservation International will through the Global Environment Facility(GEF) Capacity Building Initiative for Transparency project entitled  “Strengthening the Capacity of Institutions in Uganda to comply with the Transparency Requirements of the Paris Agreement in Uganda” contribute to the achievement of several outcomes in the plan including financing for climate change, effective and institutionalized MRV systems for monitoring Green House Gas emissions and strengthened capacity of government officials, civil society, private sector and academia to effectively integrate SDGs commitments into existing and future programs.

CI will in addition contribute to the plan through providing recommendations from a study carried out by CI and Africa Innovations Institute to identify the areas of nature essential for Uganda to achieve its NDC and nationalized SDGs and to identify the level of integration of natural capital in Uganda’s policies and planned actions for achievement of the NDC and SDGs. The report, which will be ready by late summer 2018 will include recommendations on how nature should be considered and integrated into the current development, climate plans and laws. Related to this and contingent on national support, collaborations and additional funding CI will explore potential to establish a national carbon tax in Uganda that links funding to preserving climate essential ecosystems.
