Trends.Earth, one of Vital Sign’s integrated landscape monitoring tools that tracks land change using earth observation, won an award during the GEO Week (4-9 November) in Canberra, Australia
The innovative desktop and cloud-based platform developed by Conservation International (CI) and partners was recognized under the category of applying Earth observations towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Alex Zvoleff, CI’s Senior Director, Resilience Science and a member of the Vital Signs technical team received the award on behalf of CI.
“Conservation International has been working to enable broader access to Earth observation data and their utilization to support informed decision-making and SDG monitoring and reporting, via the development of Trends.Earth,” read the award announcement.
The award, presented during a gala dinner hosted by the government of Australia, feted outstanding individuals, organizations and countries that are making exceptional contributions to GEO and the global Earth observations community.
The tool is currently supporting countries to track and report their progress towards Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) under the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
CI’s Vital Signs program is currently using Trends.Earth and other landscape monitoring tools to support 12 countries in Africa to monitor their efforts and impacts in enhancing resilience and sustainability of food systems under the Resilient Food System project.
The platform was developed through a partnership of CI, Lund University and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) with the support of the Global Environment (GEF).
